Finding the perfect spot for the event of the year, Sydney’s NYE fireworks

The Challenge

The Sydney New Year’s Eve fireworks are one of the most famous spectacles in the world with over a billion people watching globally, and over 1.5 million people watching from the city's harbour foreshore. The City of Sydney Council engaged Praxis to evaluate the user experience of the SydNYE website. The objective was to deliver evidence-based design recommendations for a best-in-class experience to meet business objectives and user needs relating to inclusivity, accessibility and dispersion of crowds at vantage points across the harbour.

Vantage point discovery

Vantage point discovery

Locals and visitors alike love watching the fireworks and soaking up the night’s atmosphere. With a plethora of vantage points across the city, many of them go unknown and undiscovered. As a result, many revellers are missing out on the fireworks, or crowding into a few well-known and overpopulated vantage points.

An important objective of the redesign was to make Sydney’s NYE experience more inclusive by providing better information about the accessibility of vantage points. Accessibility is the primary concern of everyone watching the fireworks and the new design prioritises key information to help users make quick decisions on what vantage point will cater to their unique needs for a truly special night.

The new design aims to better cater to those planning ahead of time, and those last minute planners seeking on-the-day live updates. This is achieved by improving the customer journey through the vantage point discovery process, improved maps with clearer iconography better ability to filter according to individual needs and better surfacing of accessibility information.
